IELTS Reading Section Tips - Part 1

The reading section, especially for the Academic format can be a little daunting for a few candidates, notably the ones who do not have a habit of sustained reading. But, there is always a way to improves oneself, and here are a few tips by our IELTS experts –

1.      Develop a habit of reading – Your brain needs to become accustomed to read long texts without getting fatigued. This cannot be done in a day or a few weeks. You should start reading books outside of your academic curriculum. Start with easy-to-read content and move progressively to complex content. Choose your genre of reading according to your taste as it will keep your interest intact.

2.      Develop your Vocabulary bank – If you have a weak vocabulary, it will prevent you from completely understanding the passage or you will misinterpret the given information. So, you must make efforts to enrich your vocabulary.

3.      Read first - A few people prefer to read the questions first, but we recommend that you read the passage first and comprehend the article. Otherwise, instead of correct understanding you will focus on looking for answers or keywords.

4.      Keywords – They are both helpful and counterproductive at once. Keywords are helpful to locate answers for those who have a good understanding of the language, but usually the questions do not include word-to-word information from the passage. Your knowledge of synonyms allows you to better understand and locate keywords.

5.      Focus on accuracy instead of number – You are going to get marks for number of correct answers and not for number of attempted ones. Even if you manage to answer all the 40 questions and only 10 are correct, you will receive a poor score. However, if you manage to attempt 30 questions but 27 are correct, you will score a decent band score in this section.

6.      Build speed during the preparation period – If your reading speed is slow, you must spend at least four weeks to work on your reading speed to allow completing the test in the allotted 60 minutes.
